THE DOVES MAKE IT THREE FROM THREE!

Three games. Three wins. 17 goals scored, only 2 conceded.

Someone check if the Doves have accidentally become a good football team.

Cullercoats started brightly and looked dangerous from the opening whistle, with Benfield struggling to contain the early pressure.

The breakthrough nearly came early on although apparently the referee had other ideas. Katie was adjudged offside, but Jill had made a superb run from deep and finished brilliantly… only for the flag to go up.

Where’s VAR when you need it?!

Another great chance went begging, and with what appeared to be every refereeing decision going against us.

Jill and Iona then found themselves in on goal after another excellent move, but once again the final touch deserted us. Great football, just lacking that little bit of composure in the final third.

Then, on the half-hour mark, the breakthrough finally arrived.

Jill found Iona, and at last Iona hit the target to put Cullercoats 1–0 up.

The second followed soon after. Great work from Sarah S put Katie through, and with time and space to pick her spot, Katie finished well.

0–2.

Katie then turned provider for the third, playing a superb ball through the Benfield back line. Iona showed great strength in the one-on-one before producing an excellent finish.

0–3.

The Doves were now in full flight.

A Cullercoats corner found Jill on the edge of the box before the ball reached Katie, who turned her marker and fired into the left corner.

0–4.

The fifth was another cracking finish from Katie Lemmon, who was fed in beautifully by Abbie B before calmly doing what Katie does best.

0–5.

And still the Doves weren’t finished.

Another Cullercoats corner caused chaos in the Benfield box. A loose ball fell to Iona, who made no mistake, firing into the bottom corner.

0–6.

Benfield refused to throw in the towel, and one attack saw their winger race clear down the left with excellent pace, only to see her effort flash wide of the upright.

At the other end, Iona was soon through on goal and forced an excellent save from the Benfield keeper, who bravely came out at her feet.

The keeper couldn’t hold it, though, and Iona was quickest to the rebound to tap home.

Game over. Three wins from three. Another clean sheet. Another impressive attacking display but another excellent Defensive display also limiting Benfields chances

Credit must go to Benfield’s young side, who never let their heads drop and continued to push right until the final whistle. They played some of their best football during the final 15 minutes and deserve plenty of credit for their attitude.
